NDMC Commercial Complexes: Two Major Projects in New Delhi

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is gearing up to develop two major NDMC commercial complexes as part of its plan to enhance infrastructure and generate additional revenue. These developments, announced in NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra’s budget proposals for the 2025-26 financial year, aim to maximize the use of vacant land in prime locations.

Redevelopment of Prithviraj Market Area: A New NDMC Commercial Complex

One of the primary projects is the redevelopment of vacant land opposite Prithviraj Market. Currently occupied by single-storey flats previously used by NDMC employees, the site will be demolished to make way for a new NDMC commercial complex. This modern multi-storey complex will feature a mix of retail outlets and office spaces, similar to the nearby Lok Nayak Bhawan. The complex is set to offer around 1 lakh square feet of built-up space, with approximately 18-20% of that designated for retail. The demolition is expected to begin in March 2025, with the design and feasibility studies to be completed by the end of the current financial year.

New NDMC Commercial Complex Near Akbar Bhawan

Another key project is the NDMC commercial complex planned for the vacant land in front of Akbar Bhawan, located in the prestigious Chanakyapuri area. After a delay due to litigation, this project is now moving forward, with a revised plan for a building featuring four basements and ten storeys. The project will offer 95,000 square feet of built-up area, with retail space on the ground floor and offices above. The tendering process for this project is expected to be finalized within six months, though rising costs may impact the final budget due to the time gap since the initial plans were drafted.

Future Vision: Integrated Infrastructure with NDMC Commercial Complexes

In addition to these developments, NDMC is also considering the transformation of existing open parking areas near Khan Market and Prithviraj Market into an underground multi-level parking facility. This plan is designed to ease parking congestion while complementing the new NDMC commercial complexes, further improving the area’s commercial appeal.

Conclusion: NDMC’s Commitment to Modernizing New Delhi

With the development of these NDMC commercial complexes, the New Delhi Municipal Council is set to capitalize on underutilized land, enhance urban infrastructure, and increase revenue streams. These projects are part of NDMC’s broader strategy to modernize the city’s commercial real estate, meet the growing demand for office and retail space, and create a more vibrant business environment in the heart of New Delhi.
