Delhi Makes Anti-Smog Guns Mandatory for High-Rise Buildings

New Delhi: In a significant move to tackle air pollution, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa has directed high-rise buildings, hotels, commercial complexes, major establishments such as airports, and construction sites to install anti-smog guns. The decision aims to curb the escalating pollution levels in the capital.

Chairing a high-level meeting with officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Sirsa emphasized the urgency of stringent pollution control measures. He urged all departments to develop a detailed roadmap and collect data on pollution contributions from key sites, including Delhi Airport.

New Guidelines on Anti-Smog Guns and Environmental Regulations

The MCD has been tasked with compiling a comprehensive list of existing and under-construction high-rise buildings that will be subject to these new pollution control norms. Separate guidelines will be formulated for current structures and upcoming projects to ensure stricter environmental compliance.

Sirsa also announced plans to transition all vehicles operating inside Delhi Airport to eco-friendly alternatives. He urged major commercial establishments to actively participate in pollution control by enhancing greenery within their premises and adopting anti-smog guns for dust suppression.

Green Initiatives and Pollution Control Measures

By 2026, Delhi aims to introduce at least 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce emissions. Additionally, the government will take measures to cut landfill waste, with parks and forests planned on reclaimed landfill sites. The integration of anti-smog guns in key locations will further help control airborne pollutants.

Another significant initiative under consideration is cloud seeding to mitigate pollution levels during peak smog months. The minister assured that all necessary permissions and formalities for this project would be completed on priority.

Involvement of Leading Institutions in Anti-Smog Efforts

Recognizing the importance of scientific research and technological interventions, Sirsa announced that leading institutions such as IIT Delhi and other Delhi-based colleges would be actively involved in pollution control efforts. Research on the effectiveness of anti-smog guns and other measures will play a key role in shaping future policies.

Addressing the Root Cause of Pollution

Sirsa stressed the need for self-accountability before demanding action from others, highlighting that nearly 50% of Delhi’s pollution originates within the city. He emphasized the importance of addressing internal issues to bring about effective change, including the enforcement of anti-smog guns at construction sites and major pollution-emitting areas.

Environmental activist Bhavreen Kandhari pointed out that while anti-smog guns and water sprinkling help in managing pollution, they are not comprehensive solutions. She urged the government to focus on controlling emissions from industries, construction activities, and fossil fuel plants, which significantly contribute to air pollution in Delhi.

Kandhari advocated for impactful policies that deliver lasting results, ensuring a sustainable approach to pollution control.

With these proactive measures, including the widespread deployment of anti-smog guns, the Delhi government aims to combat air pollution effectively and improve the city’s air quality for future generations.
