Drone Surveys Address Land Encroachment in Delhi

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has signed a three-party Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Survey of India (SoI) to implement drone surveys focused on addressing land encroachments in New Delhi. This initiative is designed to address uncertainties regarding land ownership among various government agencies and to safeguard these lands from encroachment and unauthorized construction.

During a recent meeting, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena reviewed the outcomes of a trial drone surveys covering 50 square kilometers. The trial yielded promising results, with drones capturing high-resolution images that clearly mapped the area. Saxena emphasized the importance of providing senior officers with access to this precise imagery to enable them to visualize infrastructure such as drains, roads, and encroachments, and to implement necessary remedial measures effectively.

The drone surveys offer significant benefits, including enhanced data accuracy and high-resolution imagery, which facilitate precise boundary demarcation and accurate ground-truthing of land parcels. The aerial images will be instrumental in identifying, mapping, and monitoring encroachments, while data elevation models will help detect vertical encroachments. This real-time data will empower authorities to address encroachments at an early stage.

The MoU aims to generate geospatial data through survey and mapping activities, serving as a foundational resource for integrating data from the DDA, MCD, and other departments in Delhi. This integration will optimize resource utilization and ensure comprehensive area coverage. The scope of work includes data acquisition, creation of topographic templates, resurveying plot boundaries, updating ownership data, and training officials in data management.

With this MoU, the DDA and MCD are expected to improve their ability to identify encroachments and unauthorized constructions, facilitating timely decision-making and swift action. This initiative supports the planned development of Delhi in alignment with the Master Plan for Delhi (MPD).
