Urgent: Stage 3 GRAP Activated as Delhi’s AQI Hits 367

In response to worsening air quality due to unfavorable weather conditions, the Centre’s air quality panel has activated Stage 3 GRAP for Delhi-NCR. As of 2 p.m. on Monday, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) hit 367, placing the city in the “very poor” category. This high level of air pollution, typically seen from November to January, is largely caused by factors like calm winds and low mixing height.

The activation of Stage 3 GRAP will bring immediate changes across Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Budh Nagar. Key measures include:

  • Hybrid Mode for Schools: Under Stage 3 GRAP, all schools and colleges in the NCR are required to switch classes for students up to Class V to hybrid mode. This will allow families to opt for online education if it is available.
  • Diesel Vehicle Restrictions: As part of Stage 3 GRAP, non-essential diesel-operated medium goods vehicles and light commercial vehicles with BS-IV or older standards will be banned from entering Delhi. This restriction extends to vehicles registered outside Delhi as well.
  • Staggered Office Timings: The Delhi and NCR state governments have been directed to implement staggered office hours for public offices and municipal bodies under Stage 3 GRAP. The central government may adopt similar staggered timings for its offices in the region.

The Graded Response Action Plan categorizes air quality into four stages based on AQI levels:

  • Stage I (Poor): AQI between 201-300
  • Stage II (Very Poor): AQI between 301-400
  • Stage III (Severe): AQI between 401-450
  • Stage IV (Severe Plus): AQI above 450

This proactive measure is crucial as Delhi faces recurring challenges with air pollution during the winter months. The government urges residents to take precautions and follow health advisories during this severe air quality phase.
