Noida International Airport Phase 2: Land Acquisition and Development Progress

The district administration of Noida has begun the process of acquiring land for the second phase of the Noida International Airport, which will include a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub and an aviation hub. This phase involves acquiring 1,365 acres of land, with 1,181.3 hectares coming from six villages: Karauli Bangar, Dayanatpur, Kuraib, Ranhera, Mudharh, and Beerampur. The acquisition cost is estimated at Rs 4,898 crore, with the remaining land being government-owned.
Current Status of Land Acquisition
The administration has successfully taken possession of 237 hectares out of the 1,181 hectares earmarked for acquisition in the six villages for Noida International Airport Phase 2. Specifically, land has been acquired from three villages:
- Birampur: 54.6 out of 57.6 hectares
- Dayantpur: 145 out of 148 hectares
- Mudharh: 37 out of 48 hectares
District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma stated that the process of taking possession in the remaining villages is ongoing, with compensation distribution nearing completion. “We are taking possession of the land where all the processes have been completed,” he added.
Compensation and Resettlement
The state government issued a notification on November 18, 2022, to acquire land for Noida International Airport Phase 2, with compensation distribution beginning in July last year. The resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) process is also in progress to relocate approximately 13,000 families affected by the land acquisition. These families will be resettled in Falaida Bangar and Modalpur, requiring 212 hectares of land. Farmers from Ranhera, Kuraib, and Karoli Bangar villages will be completely displaced.
Project Timeline and Challenges
Officials from Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), overseeing the airport project, reported that the private concessionaire Yamuna International Airport Ltd (YIAPL) is in discussions with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to start test flights by November this year. The government aims to commence commercial operations by the end of the year for Noida International Airport Phase 2.However, the project completion date has been postponed to the end of April 2025, instead of the official completion date of September 29 this year. The delay is attributed to slow progress in constructing the passenger terminal due to a shortage of special-grade steel and delays in fabricating steel frames (purlins) for the terminal roof.
Measures to Address Delays
During an inspection on June 28, then-chief secretary DS Mishra instructed the concessionaire to start commercial services by December at any cost and requested the developer to submit an action plan for the same by July 15. To address the fabrication issues, NIAL CEO Arun Vir Singh announced an increase in the number of vendors at the airport site from four to eight. “Doubling the number of vendors will ensure the work is completed on time. Steel is being supplied from Chhattisgarh, and the structure will be prepared at the construction site,” he said.Additionally, necessary equipment, including the instrument landing system (CAT 1 and CAT 3), will be installed before test flights begin.Noida International Airport Phase 2 is a significant step towards enhancing aviation infrastructure in the region, despite the challenges and delays faced. The administration’s proactive measures aim to ensure timely completion and commencement of operations.
