Master Plan for Delhi 2041: A Vision for Sustainable Growth

NEW DELHI: On Monday, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar stated that the draft Master Plan for Delhi 2041 (MPD) is presently under review and will be announced shortly.During a press conference marking the first 100 days of the Modi government’s third term, Khattar acknowledged that there have been challenges in finalizing the Master Plan for Delhi 2041, but assured that public suggestions are being carefully evaluated.

The approval process for the Master Plan for Delhi 2041 has been ongoing for one and a half years. In February of last year, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena approved the draft, highlighting its focus on inclusive development, sustainability, and innovative strategies, including transit-oriented development hubs, land pooling, heritage conservation, and rejuvenation of the Yamuna River.

The final approval from the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry is still pending. The Master Plan for Delhi 2041, crafted by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), serves as a statutory framework to direct the city’s development by analyzing current conditions and outlining pathways for future growth.

Initially established in 1962 under the Delhi Development Act of 1957, these master plans are designed with a 20-year outlook and offer a thorough framework for the city’s planned development. According to the DDA, the draft Master Plan for Delhi 2041 is designed as a “strategic” and “enabling” framework, built on insights gained from previous plans and lessons learned from various successful projects across India.
