NGT to Investigate Illegal Groundwater Extraction in Delhi

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has constituted a committee to investigate allegations of illegal groundwater extraction in the Kamla Nagar area of north Delhi. The issue arose following claims that two individuals, involved in large-scale commercial construction on Bungalow Road, were extracting groundwater unlawfully through borewells.

In an order issued on December 11, NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member A. Senthil Vel instructed the formation of a joint committee. This panel will include representatives from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), tasked with examining the situation on-site.

The committee has been directed to submit a report within six weeks, detailing the number of borewells in the area and whether the proper permissions were obtained from relevant authorities. The NGT also called for responses from several stakeholders, including the two individuals involved, Roop Nagar Police Station, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the sub-divisional magistrate of Burari, the MCD, the Central Ground Water Authority, and the Central Ground Water Board.

The case of illegal groundwater extraction is scheduled for further proceedings on April 3, 2025.
