GMDA Budget 2024-25: Key Projects for Gurugram’s Development Unveiled

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to undertake several significant projects aimed at enhancing the city’s infrastructure and public amenities. These initiatives will be discussed at the upcoming board meeting, where the GMDA will present the GMDA budget 2024-25 of Rs 2,887 crore. Additionally, projects worth Rs 3,500 crore will be proposed for approval by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who will chair the meeting in Chandigarh. This will be Saini’s first time chairing a board meeting since his appointment in April.

Key Projects on the Agenda

1. Construction of Flyovers

A major highlight of the meeting will be the proposal for constructing two flyovers at the intersections of sectors 45-46-51-52 and sectors 85-86-89-90. These flyovers aim to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity within the city.

2. Redevelopment of Southern Peripheral Road (SPR)

The redevelopment of SPR from Vatika Chowk to the CPR-SPR junction on the Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH-8) is another critical project. Initially planned in March 2019 and approved in June 2022, the project involves revamping a 14km stretch of SPR by building eight flyovers, widening carriageways to six lanes, and adding service lanes. However, concerns about traffic volume led to a revised plan for a signal-free elevated corridor, which will connect SPR with the Dwarka and Delhi-Mumbai expressways, providing seamless connectivity and reducing congestion.

3. Redevelopment of Tau Devi Lal Stadium

The agenda also includes a Rs 634 crore plan for the redevelopment of Tau Devi Lal Stadium. The proposal includes increasing the seating capacity to 35,000 for the cricket ground and 15,000 for the football ground, along with the construction of a swimming pool.

Water Supply and Treatment Enhancements

The GMDA’s water division has proposed projects worth Rs 1,400 crore to augment the city’s water supply, upgrade the drain network, and increase sewage treatment capacity. Key initiatives include:

  • Additional Filtration Units: Installation of additional filtration units at water treatment plants in Chandu Budhera and Basai, each expected to enhance capacity by 100 million litres per day.
  • Sewage Treatment: Upgrading the city’s sewage treatment infrastructure to handle increased capacity and improve efficiency.

Public Transport Improvements

To boost public transport, the GMDA plans to procure 200 electric buses under the PM e-Sewa scheme. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to phase out the existing fleet of 200 CNG buses by 2029. The plan includes:

  • Electric Buses: Augmenting the fleet with 200 electric buses of 12-meter length for the next financial year.
  • Supporting Infrastructure: Improving bus depots and other supporting infrastructure to ensure efficient operation of city buses.

Enhanced Security Measures

In addition to infrastructure and transport projects, the GMDA plans to install 10,000 CCTV cameras across the city to enhance security and surveillance.

Conclusion

The GMDA’s ambitious plans, as outlined in the GMDA budget 2024-25, reflect a comprehensive approach to urban development, focusing on improving infrastructure, public transport, water supply, and security. These projects, once approved and implemented, are expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for Gurugram’s residents and support the city’s growth and development.
