Dwarka Expressway Service Roads Approved for Construction Ahead of Inauguration

The state government’s approval of the construction of 15.3 kilometers of Dwarka Expressway service roads on both sides, a week ahead of the speedway’s inauguration, is a significant step toward ensuring commuter safety. The move comes in response to concerns raised by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) about the risks posed by illegal cuts taken by commuters in the absence of these service roads.

The project, estimated to cost around Rs 99.5 crore, was greenlit in a meeting of the high-power purchase committee. With construction expected to span two and a half years, the expressway is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 11.

NHAI had previously highlighted the dangers of unauthorized access to the expressway due to delays in constructing sector roads by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). The newly approved Dwarka Expressway service roads, each 7.5 meters wide, will run parallel to the speedway and provide a vital lifeline for commuters of neighboring residential, commercial, and institutional areas.

In addition to the service roads, the project includes the construction of footpaths and surface drains to enhance overall infrastructure. GMDA officials have indicated that work allocation will happen soon, with construction slated to commence within a few months. The service roads are expected to significantly improve traffic flow and accessibility to the speedway for residents of townships being developed along its periphery.

Despite the imminent opening of the expressway, direct access to the access-controlled corridor for residents of nearby areas will not be available until 2026, when the Dwarka Expressway service roads are scheduled for completion. Until then, commuters will have to take detours or use makeshift ramps. The government’s swift action in approving the construction of these service roads is crucial for ensuring proper connectivity with the speedway and addressing the needs of the city’s growing population shifting to sectors along the expressway.
