NDMC Property Tax: 3,200 Defaulters Owe ₹200 Crore in Dues

New Delhi: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is stepping up efforts to improve Property Tax collection, identifying around 3,200 defaulters who owe nearly Rs 200 crore over the past three years. To recover these dues, the council has issued notices and is considering strict action against non-payers.

NDMC Property Tax Collection Goals for 2024-25

NDMC has set a property tax collection target of Rs 1,150 crore for 2024-25, aiming to surpass the Rs 1,030 crore collected in the previous financial year. By analyzing tax data from the past three years, the council has identified defaulters who have repeatedly ignored reminders to pay their dues.

Notices and Actions Against Defaulters

Under NDMC Property Tax regulations, defaulters first receive a 30-day show cause notice. If they fail to respond or settle their dues, NDMC may escalate the matter by sending reminders, and in extreme cases, taking legal action such as sealing properties or freezing bank accounts.

Recently, NDMC issued show cause notices to around 380 property owners who had disputed their tax assessments in the past. Even after their objections were reviewed and revised tax demands were issued, they failed to make payments, prompting the council to take further action. Officials have warned that if dues remain unpaid, stricter measures will follow.

Understanding NDMC Property Tax

NDMC manages about 15,600 properties, including 1,600 government-owned buildings and around 14,000 private properties. Of these, approximately 1,000 properties are exempt from NDMC Property Tax. As of mid-February 2024-25, NDMC has collected Rs 735 crore from 9,600 taxable properties, with the final payment deadline set for March 31.

Unlike the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), where property owners assess their own taxes, Property Tax is calculated by the council based on official records and on-ground surveys. Property owners can review assessments, raise objections online or in person, and request corrections if necessary.

Supporting Taxpayers and Improving Compliance

To help property owners comply with tax payments, NDMC is working closely with market associations, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and government agencies. Tax inspectors are also visiting residential areas to facilitate on-the-spot Property Tax collection. Additionally, NDMC is prioritizing the recovery of long-overdue dues from government agencies.

With these efforts, NDMC aims to streamline tax collection, improve compliance, and ensure a more efficient and transparent taxation system for property owners.
