DDA to Start Jailorwala Bagh EWS Flats Possession in July

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is set to begin issuing possession letters to 1,078 allottees of houses in Jailorwala Bagh starting in July. This move, part of the “Jahan Jhuggi Wahin Makan” scheme, signifies the commencement of the Jailorwala Bagh EWS flats possession process, an in situ rehabilitation project aimed at providing housing for slum dwellers.

An official revealed that out of 1,675 EWS flats constructed, 1,396 flats at Jailorwala Bagh were allocated in March. Among these, 1,078 flats have been assigned to eligible slum dwellers from the Jailorwala Bagh JJ cluster. The remaining 318 flats have been distributed to nearby JJ clusters, including Golden Park, Ram Pura, and opposite Mata Jai Kaur School in Ashok Vihar.

While the process of identifying beneficiaries for the remaining flats is still ongoing, DDA has issued demand-cum-allotment letters to the eligible 1,078 jhuggi dwellers. The necessary formalities for issuing possession letters, including the collection of beneficiary contributions, have been completed. The official stated, “The process of handing over the flat keys and providing final possession to the beneficiaries is expected to commence shortly.”

The Jailorwala Bagh EWS flats possession process involves allotting these flats to eligible JJ dwellers at a beneficiary contribution of Rs 1.4 lakh, significantly lower than the construction cost of Rs 25 lakh per flat. The newly constructed flats are well-equipped with modern amenities, including community facilities and a sewerage treatment system. Each flat, covering 340 square feet, includes a bedroom, living room, kitchen, separate toilet and bathroom, and a balcony.

The total residential built-up area of the project is approximately 67,000 square meters, with an additional 1,000 square meters dedicated to community facilities. The complex also includes parking space for 337 vehicles. The authority has provided for community amenities such as halls, shops, an anganwadi, a classroom, a doctor clinic, and a children’s daycare center in Tower-C. Each tower is equipped with lifts, and there is both basement and surface parking available. Ample green spaces measuring 9,257.7 square meters have been incorporated into the project site.

This project marks DDA’s second in situ rehabilitation effort, following the construction and inauguration of 3,024 EWS flats at Kalkaji in November 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Kalkaji flats were designed to rehabilitate slum dwellers in the area. DDA’s third in situ development project in Kathputli Colony is underway, with plans to construct 2,800 flats in 14-storey towers for slum dwellers residing there for nearly 40 years.

In March, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena announced a fourth in situ project targeting the redevelopment of three jhuggi clusters in East Delhi—Kalandar Colony, Deepak Colony, and Dilshad Vihar Colony. This project will utilize over seven hectares of land to develop multi-storey buildings, furthering DDA’s commitment to in situ rehabilitation and improving living conditions for slum dwellers across the city.
