GMDA’s Anti-Encroachment Drive Against Illegal Activities

In a recent anti-encroachment drive, GMDA (Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority) officials inspected areas in DLF Phase 3 and Vyapar Kendra, Sushant Lok-1, to curb illegal commercial activities in residential zones. During the inspection, officials uncovered significant encroachments along Nathupur Road, with unauthorized shops, vendors, and building extensions obstructing up to 10 feet of road space. This congestion, particularly on Nathupur Road connecting to MG Road, has led to widespread issues, with businesses renting out space for Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 per month.
RS Batth, GMDA’s DTP and nodal officer for enforcement, revealed that large residential plots had been misused for commercial purposes, including the illegal conversion of floors into gyms, one-bedroom flats, and student accommodations. These alterations violate urban planning regulations and compromise the functionality of residential areas.
To address these violations, GMDA officials have laid out plans for a systematic anti-encroachment drive, starting with a detailed survey to document violations and clearing encroachments from key roads. A public awareness campaign will also be launched, encouraging cooperation from local residents and business owners to prevent further illegal constructions. Batth emphasized that while dialogue with stakeholders is important, stricter measures would be enforced against habitual offenders.
Through these efforts, GMDA’s anti-encroachment drive aims to restore the area’s functionality, ensuring a balanced approach to both residential and commercial development.
