Farmers Meet with Yogi Adityanath on Land and Compensation

A delegation of farmers from Noida met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow on Monday to address their long-standing demands for increased compensation and allocation of developed residential plots. The meeting, which lasted 45 minutes, included representatives from Bhartiya Kisan Parishad, All India Kisan Sabha, and Kisan Ekta Sangh.

During the discussion, the farmers highlighted issues related to the implementation of the 2013 Land Acquisition Act and their demand for 10% of the acquired land to be returned as developed plots. Their movement for fair compensation and developed land allocations gained traction last month following several protests.

Farmers’ Protests Intensify in December

On December 2, nearly 5,000 farmers attempted to march towards Delhi, causing severe traffic congestion on the Noida Expressway near Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal. The next day, protestors staged a sit-in at the same location, resulting in multiple detentions. Between December 4 and 6, over 100 farmers were taken into custody from protest hotspots, including the Yamuna Expressway loop and Pari Chowk.

In response to the escalating unrest, the Uttar Pradesh government established a high-level committee led by Infrastructure and Industrial Development Department Principal Secretary Anil Kumar Sagar. This panel was tasked with reviewing recommendations from a prior committee and addressing farmers’ demands for increased compensation and developed land.

Assurance of New Policy from the Chief Minister

Despite the formation of the committee, farmers resumed their protests on December 27, frustrated by the lack of progress on their demands. However, Monday’s development, where farmers meet with Yogi Adityanath, brought a glimmer of hope. All India Kisan Sabha president Rupesh Verma revealed that CM Yogi Adityanath assured the delegation of a forthcoming policy to address their concerns.

The proposed policy aims to grant farmers developed plots and facilitate land purchases at market rates, offering them a substantial stake in the development process. Verma expressed optimism, stating, “This will give farmers a significant role in the state’s growth and ensure their demands are met.”

As the farmers await concrete action, this development marks a critical step in resolving their long-standing issues with land acquisition and compensation.
