MCD Speeds Up Dilli Gramodaya Abhiyan Projects to Enhance Delhi Villages

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is accelerating its efforts to complete 341 pending projects under the Dilli Gramodaya Abhiyan initiative, which were approved earlier this year. Most of these projects are in villages within the Najafgarh, Narela, South, and West Delhi zones.
In March, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) approved 349 projects, focusing on enhancing roads, drainage systems, and streetlights in various villages, allocating Rs 407 crore for these development works. However, election processes caused delays, resulting in only eight projects being initiated. The remaining projects are pending due to the lack of finalized agencies to execute the work.
Current Progress and Future Plans
MCD has issued work orders for 28 projects so far, including eight related to road and drainage construction in the Najafgarh zone. More projects are expected to be awarded soon. The scheme prioritizes 16 projects in the West zone, such as road strengthening in Basai Darapur, Phirni Road, Madipur village, and Chowkandi Nagar, along with drain improvements in Bali Nagar, Rattan Park, and Madipur village.
Systematic plans for drainage systems and road construction or renovation are also in place for areas in East Delhi, like Khajoori Khas. An official stated, “Work for the construction or renovation of the approach road and internal roads will also be taken up here.”
Addressing Streetlight Issues
Residents in several zones have long demanded better streetlighting. In the Narela zone, 14 projects have been selected to improve streetlights, including installations at Phirni Road and Sirja Roads of Kanjhawala village, Bakhtawarpur village to Hiranki Khetwala Road, and other locations.
Similarly, in the Najafgarh zone, 32 projects aim to enhance street lighting and eliminate dark spots in areas such as Bamnoli village, Goyla Khurd Chhawla, and Kapashera ward.
Initiative Background
In December 2023, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena launched the ‘Dilli Gramodaya Abhiyan’ to redevelop both rural and urban villages in Delhi. The DDA has allocated Rs 800 crore for rejuvenating nearly 200 urbanized villages. These funds will be used for improving basic infrastructure, livelihoods, livestock management, healthcare, land use, and water management, among other aspects.
This concerted effort by the MCD and DDA underscores the commitment to enhance the living conditions and infrastructure in Delhi’s villages, promoting a balanced development across urban and rural areas.
