Illegal Construction in Saraswati Kunj: Bold Demolition Drive Clears Five-Acre Land

The enforcement wing of the town and country planning department (DTCP), along with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), undertook a significant operation in Saraswati Kunj, an area located off Golf Course Road in Gurugram. On Thursday, they cleared a five-acre plot by demolishing eight illegal buildings and 250 newly constructed huts. This action was taken in compliance with the directions of Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav, who instructed town planners from DTCP, Manish Yadav, and GMDA, RS Batth, to conduct a joint operation against illegal construction in Saraswati Kunj. Construction in this area had been banned by the high court due to ongoing legal proceedings.

The operation involved the demolition of eight under-construction houses, three of which were razed to the ground, along with 250 makeshift huts. This demolition drive was carried out with the assistance of 50 laborers and earthmovers. Notices and restoration orders were issued to the houses for illegal construction. District Town Planner GMDA RS Batth had also issued announcements regarding the removal of illegal settlements before the demolition drive.

Following the clearance, GMDA plans to fence the land to prevent further encroachments. Saraswati Kunj, established in 1983, has been embroiled in a legal battle since 2004. Allegedly, the cooperative group allotted plots to 9,000 applicants despite the colony’s capacity to accommodate only 4,000 houses. To resolve the dispute, the government formed a commission in 2016, headed by retired IAS officer SP Sharma, to identify the original plot owners. Consequently, all forms of construction have been prohibited within the colony.

Despite the ban, illegal construction in Saraswati Kunj persist, with houses being built without permission or approved building plans. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav previously held a meeting with the board of administrators to address the issue of encroachment and illegal construction in Saraswati Kunj. GMDA and DTCP were tasked with assessing the area to identify fresh encroachments, report their findings, and take action to remove and demolish the encroachments. The deputy registrar of cooperative societies was assigned to provide a list of illegal occupants for further action.

District Town Planner RS Batth stated that they would soon launch a joint action plan to address these illegal activities. A joint inspection conducted on Monday revealed that structures were being built by illegal occupants without any approval, along with encroachments in the form of makeshift huts. The authorities are committed to curbing such activities and ensuring compliance with legal regulations.
