Empowering Connectivity: Expansion of the Delhi Metro Set to Transform Commuting

The Union cabinet is expected to greenlight the expansion of the Delhi Metro with two new corridors. These corridors, from Lajpat Nagar to G-Block in Saket and from Inderlok to Indraprastha, will add approximately 20 kilometers to the network. Approval is likely to come just before the announcement of Lok Sabha election dates.

The exact cost of these new corridors remains undisclosed, with sources remaining tight-lipped. However, the expansions are anticipated to provide much-needed direct connectivity. The Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor, spanning 8 kilometers, will feature eight stations, while the Inderlok-Indraprastha line, covering 12 kilometers, will incorporate 10 stations.

The aim of these expansion of the Delhi Metro is to significantly reduce travel time for passengers, offering direct routes to their destinations without the need for lengthy detours via other trains. They will also connect bustling commercial hubs. Once approved, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will commence the bidding process, aiming to address the escalating congestion in Delhi by enhancing connectivity.

Expediting the development of these corridors aligns with the Centre’s broader vision to alleviate travel woes in Delhi-NCR and combat pollution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently reaffirmed the government’s comprehensive approach to infrastructure development, emphasizing that the expansion of the Delhi Metro is crucial for mitigating traffic congestion and pollution in the region.

The Delhi government has already sanctioned Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for the development of three additional Metro Rail lines and is actively pursuing approval for three more corridors under Phase IV. This concerted effort underscores the commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure and addressing the pressing challenges of urban mobility and pollution in the national capital.
