Alstom Empowers Delhi Metro Phase-IV with Commencement of Production

The Delhi Metro Phase-IV project has taken a significant step forward with the commencement of production of 52 train sets, each consisting of six cars. This milestone was marked by a ceremony at the Alstom facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The new trains are designed to operate at a safe speed of 95 kmph, with an operational speed of 85 kmph, and boast driverless features, enhancing the metro’s efficiency and safety.

Inspired by the tricolours of the national flag, the trains’ saloon interiors will feature a blend of saffron, white, and green paint on the door pillars, adding a patriotic touch to the design. The total value of the project, awarded in 2022, is 312 million euros, which includes the maintenance of 13 train sets for 15 years. This maintenance contract marks the first time Delhi Metro has outsourced such work to an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), signifying a new approach to metro system maintenance.

The Delhi Metro Phase-IV project comprises three priority corridors totaling 65 km and 45 stations. The Janakpuri West-RK Ashram corridor, stretching 29 km with 22 stations, is the longest, while the Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor, spanning 23.62 km with 15 stations, is the new Golden Line. The Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor, covering 12.32 km and featuring eight stations, is an extension of the Pink Line. The front of the train for the Golden Line will be painted metallic gold, a first for Alstom in an Indian metro project.

Under the Make in India initiative, these trains have been entirely designed in India and will be built at the Sri City manufacturing facility. The commencement of production was marked by a ceremony attended by officials from DMRC and Alstom India. Vikas Kumar, DMRC MD, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The Delhi metro stands as the lifeline of our city, and the addition of new routes will greatly enhance connectivity in the national capital.” Olivier Loison, Alstom India MD, also commented, saying, “We are honoured to be building these modern trains for commuters in Delhi NCR.”

The commencement of production for Delhi Metro Phase-IV marks a significant milestone in the development of Delhi’s metro system, promising improved connectivity and advanced technology for commuters in the national capital region.
